I try to make a layout for each birthday of my children. My son's birthday was back in June - I finally made it!

Pie Charts
I've seem a few pie-charts in scrapbooking layouts and kits lately. I loved this kit by Paislee Press and One Little Bird - the pie chart described my son almost perfectly. I only swapped mischievieous with adventurous, because my boy has plenty of mischief but is not very adventurous.
The top right hand side was looking a bit bare so I added a strip of washi tape. Then I covered some of the red hearts with orange handcut ones.

Still doing Photo A Day
Well, sort of, in fairness I should rename it "4 or more photos a week project". I definitely take lots of photos most of the days, but there are days I couldn't be bothered.
If you look at my Shuttercal calendar, it is full of holes, but I''ll try to be more diligent. I found that my best photos come when I set some sort of target, so this week I am going for 2D/3D. That is, mixing dimensional object with photos/prints or drawing. That's something I've done in the past. In fact, my first photo of the 365 project is 2D/3D: ( cup and spoon over an old drawing of mine)
I like this one too: (buttons over a Dulux paint brochure)
And recently I came across this beauty in pinterest: (by Kari Herer)

Bubble Love
I have a childish love of soap bubbles - one of the easiest and cheapest toys you could ever imagine - no matter how many times I see them, they still fascinate me.
Most of the layouts I have done lately are from a Studio Calico kit; Brooklyn Flea. I had used most of the patterned papers and this one (floral black & white on one side, yellow stripes on the other) was the last one left. Altough I liked it, I was afraid the paper make the layout look too dark. It is a bit contradictory that I ended up using it with such an airy subject, but I loved how it turned out.

Colourful popcorn
Last time in Brazil, my children discovered coloured popcorn. I don't want to think how much artificial adictives there were there, but hopefully once in a while, it won't hurt.
The title was printed in Paint Shop Pro. PSP has a nice feature where you can print only the outline of the any text. I printed the solid text with assorted colours and the outline in black with a slight offset.
Journaling:
"Since we go to Brazil every year, you and Lucy have already developed some “traditions”, that is, things that you like to do when we go there. One of them is to go to a feira. Feira is a street market, initially they used to sell vegetables, but bit by bit they developed and now you can get meat, household stuff, pirate DVDs, toys, plants, clothes, costume jewelry, herbal medicine, even ornamental fish. Whatever. You name it. But we go for the food. Specially pastéis. I am mad about pastel and now you are too. This year, in Prudente, we stopped in a feira after a busy day in the swimming pool. Of course we had pastéis and then went to explore the other delicacies of the feira. And we found this: colorful popcorn. Who knows, perhaps another tradition in the making?"
As I reread the journaling to post, I discovered that I wrote "two" instead of "too" in the layout. Tell me,,w many more spelling mistakes are still left? Or maybe, don't tell me, I'll get depressed.

A Photo Hunt
Back in February, in a attempt to get my own photo inspiration going, I challenged the children togo in a photo hunt.
I printed out a sheet with stuff to look for (which my son insisted should be called "activity sheet"); armed my son with an old point & shoot, my daughter with her own mobile phone and I with my DSLR and headed to the Botanic Gardens.
It was a partial success, as we arrived there a bit too late, and by the time we had something to eat, the gardens were due to close soon.
Still, we managed to take a few photos as I had set relatively easy tasks. Finding a leaf or a flower in a botanic garden is not exactly that hard!
One item was a self portrait. My son asked what that was, and when he understood the concept, he turned the camera towards him and pressed the shutter. It came out of focus, and only his nose and eyes show, but I love it.
Asian eyelids are usually hidden, you usually don't see a "line" above their eyes. When I was a child, I had one eye with hidden eyelid and one with a visible eyelid, which made one eye look bigger than the other. This eventually corrected itself, but sometimes, usually when I am tired, I get this look again. So does my mother. And my son is the same:
It's only a coincidence, since my son was adopted when he was a baby, but I treasure these connections. (To be clear, it wouldn't matter if my child was completely different, I would still love him the same, but I am just sayin'; it is nice.)
I wanted to scrap this photo along other ones he took in the photo hunt. Since the photos had lots of green in it, I added red to balance the overall look.
It was a hard set to scrap, as they wouldn't be the sort of photo I'd normally choose, but I am really pleased that I managed to come with something is ok-ish.

one about the girl, one about the boy
I don't much use youtube, but definitely it has its use. My daughter wanted her hair braided into french plaits. Which I didn't know how to. After watching a couple of tutorial in youtube, I managed to have her hair done.
This one is missing the title - I meant to superimpose "Tiddler" over "thing" on the die cut but didn't come round to do it.
The journaling says:
"Because you like to tell tales, I bought you a book about a little fish called Tiddler who always told tall lates. I think it backfired on me because you saw it as an encouragement.You told your teacher that I met President Obama when he visited Ireland.
You didn't think you'd get caught but you were.
Don't tell tales, Luke!"
I love it, not because of the design, but because it records something about my son, a historical event and also has my son's handwriting on it, I copied his school work and added to the layout. Sadly his grammar is not the best and I didn't think of asking him what he meant to wrote."

Star Reader and December summary
My son always loved books and now he's starting to read by himself. I knew he'd learn fast, because he showed an interest in the written words very early.
He loves Mr. Men books, so I got him a Christmas themed one in a booksale at my children's school. And one weekend morning, just before Christmas, he woke up, sat in our bed and started diligently reading the book. Slowing, getting some words right, struggling with others. And how cool it is, he was wearing Mr Men PJ!
While I sometimes make busier and "lumpier" layouts, the simple ones are the ones that I like most. Like this one.
I stitched at the top and bottom of the photo, it is hard so see in the photo, but it added a little something to the layout.

Recently Dulce Silva, another Brazilian expat, posted this layout in the Studio Calico gallery. I was amazed how similar it is with the layout above. They both are 8.5x11, with a large photo going all the width of the layout, papers strips at the top & bottom and 3 stars.
And Project 12/ December 2010. I really don't want to give in this project - i have to get my act together, I am missing 3 months in 2010...
A photo-less layout. Copied the idea from something that Ali Edwards make a few Christmas ago. It's a way to keep some of the Christmas cards. The little drawings on top of the December label are by my kiddies - their contribution for their respective classes' Christmas card.

{No} Joy :-)
Like last year, I'll be giving a customised 2011 calendar to my immediate family this year. Since Photobox had a special offer until last Thursday, I was rushing trying to sort out the photos for the calendar. For December I wanted to have a photo of my two children with the Santa Hat.
That was the plan. I couldn't get a half decent photo of my son, on his own or with his sister. He'd make faces, cover his head with the hat, turn back, etc etc. So I gave up, and let my children take photos of each other and of me.
